Resum

Consulting bilingual dictionaries is a widespread practice among foreign language learners in the context of higher education. Despite this fact, and the wide range of dictionary types and formats increasingly adapted to the specific needs of users, there is still a gap in the acquisition and development of lexicographical competence. The significant developments made in the field of bilingual lexicography during the last decades do not seem to have had a real impact on learners’ lexicographical habits. In this article, takingonline bilingual dictionaries as an example due to their high-frequency use among university students, we aimed to claim the use of dictionaries as a central skill in the foreign languages teaching-learning process in higher education and the role of bilingual dictionaries as a learning tool both inside and outside the classroom.
