Abstract

The objective of the Project was to evaluate the effectiveness in the clinical practice of a novel educational method – Primary Care Clinical Ultrasound Classroom (AECAP), which offers theoretical-practical training and continued support, with cases and patients in real time, and which includes the evaluation of the results of 18 physicians with health care quota. The design favored the afternoon participation in the Study that would not interfere with the professional practice. The study was conducted in the Teaching Health Center of San Juan of Salamanca. Furthermore, the population assigned to the Center allowed for sufficient case studies to cover the educational needs. Informed consent to be studied under the control of the professionals was requested from all the patients enrolled. The Project setting was that of the province of Salamanca; those attending were family physicians (FP). The originality of the Project is found in the initial training, the practice and continued support in real time with patients, the evaluation of the transfer of the impact with more-documented referral to specialized care, and the decrease of requests for ultrasounds to the Radiodiagnostic Department. Up to now, no study with such design has been conducted in our Country, nor have we found any similar projects outside of our borders. The results, after one year, have shown the high satisfaction of the patients and physicians participating in the project, the variety of clinical cases presented in the 26 sessions held (63 patients presented and a total of 73 ultrasound diagnoses), and that the rate of referrals of the FP of the Study to the six specialties analyzed are lower than those of the urban health care centers of Salamanca. In conclusion, we can state that the educational method of the AECAP is the most important added value of the Project and that it has demonstrated a lower referral rate to the specialties studied by the physicians participating in it.
