Abstract

We describe the representations of generalization used by elementary school sixth graders (12 yearsold), without formal knowledge of algebra, and first and second graders in high school (13 and 14years old, respectively), who begin their algebraic training. A total of 313 students participated insolving a generalization task in the functional context of school algebra. The task was part of aselection test to participate in a mathematical talent program. The results inform that studentsrepresent the generalization of the functional relationships verbally and symbolically. They also showthat, unlike the use of functional relationships, the representations of generalization are influencedby the students’ grade. The representations of the functional relationships in high school are morediverse in structure.
