Resumo

This work focuses on characterizing design research, a methodological framework in evolutionwithin research in learning sciences which has a growing presence in the Mathematics Educationscientific literature. It encompasses diverse studies that aim to create and analyse new teaching andlearning possibilities in real contexts. They are characterized by being interventionist, adaptative, multivariable, multilevel, orientated by theory, generative and cyclic. Three forms of hypotheticalknowledge act as a guide in these studies: conjectures, hypothetical learning trajectories anddesign principles. After developing this characterization, this work is closed with someconsiderations about the assessment of the quality of design research and some lessons learned inthe process of publishing design research results in research articles.
