Mathematics books have been the focus of several investigations within the field of history ofmathematics and mathematics education. However, periodical-type publications (diaries, weeklies,newspapers, etc.) have not been so commonly considered in this field. This study presents aninstrument to analyze from the perspective of the history of mathematics and mathematics educationthe publications about mathematics and mathematics education included in weeklies, journals, etc.In order to do so, a descriptive research focused on the analysis of historical texts is presentedusing the content analysis technique. The use of this instrument is exemplified by the categorizationof some publications included in two weeklies published in the 18th century in Spain.
