Abstract
It presents a comparative overview of the evolution of the major universities of the Iberian Peninsula from the 15th to the 19th century. The university expansion of the 16th century and the new institutional models are discussed in detail. Special attention is paid to the existing power groups and the financial structures of the academies. Subsequently, the evolution of Salamanca, Valladolid, Alcalá and Coimbra is analysed in their general historical contexts. Finally, the changes brought about by the 19th century liberals are described.
