Abstract

The rescue of a person with multiple injuries in an aquatic environment, especially if there is doubt that there may be spinal cord injuries, is extremely complicated owning to the inherent risk of aggravating injury. The present doctoral thesis proposes the design and creation of a new material that facilitates the rescue and immobilization of a multiple injured person in an aquatic environment, so that the risk of escalating the injuries is minimized, especially if spinal cord injury is suspected. These accidents are rare, but still the intervention of rescue services in such cases is of utmost importance, because despite the low percentage, there is little research into it and this work is necessary. Therefore, this intervention includes the stretcher, which has the spinal board enclosed within the corresponding cavity. The spinal board fits inside that cavity or lower area of the stretcher top surface, being the spinal board attached to the stretcher by coupling means.
