Abstract
The acquisition of prepositional verbs in Spanish as a foreign languagepresents some difficulties: the selection of the appropriate preposition does not follow anyrules, some verbs select more than one preposition, and the semantic differences betweenthe different possibilities vary enormously. These structures are difficult to learn for any L2learner and especially for Chinese speakers, whose mother tongue does not have this typeof constructions. Based on error analysis, this study investigates where the main difficultyin the production of these structures lies in order to draw valid conclusions for L2 teaching. For this purpose, an experiment was designed with eight prepositional verbs of differentcharacteristics. The research has been done with 117 Chinese-speakers as Spanish ForeignLanguage students. Frequency effects (type and token frequency) on wrong answers havebeen measured and they have been found to be significant. The lexical strength of the differentstructures has been used as an agent for teaching outline and, accordingly, the design of connectionist learning models has been proposed.
