Abstract

We intend with this paper to deal a panoramic vision of the main approaches which have studied, from the boundaries of semantics-pragmatics, the meaning and functioning of the so-called approximative adverbs (i.e. words of kind casi or apenas, ‘almost’ and ‘barely’ in English respectively). Their account, disputed by pragmatics and semantics, has developed a whole research line (above all in English publications) focused in explaining the entailmentinference relations of these adverbs. In that way, as a first approach, we shall treat from a general point of view the features of the approximative adverbs (grammatical treatment, negation and meaning components), in order to introduce the both most relevant linguistic stances which are nowadays starring the debate about the linguistic description of approximatives: the counterfactual implicatures and the theory of assertoric inertia.
