This paper explores the ubiquity of polarity in the Spanish adverbs casi and apenas (English ‘almost’ and ‘barely’). This paper presents a modular approach that deals with several concepts and definitions involved in the notion of polarity, shedding light on some terminological problems about the syntax-semantic interface and taking into consideration the pragmatic implications of the adverbs casi and apenas. Organizing the different linguistic levels over which these adverbs have scope, it is possible to outline the ways in which the polarity of casi and apenas arises, so that a concomitancy between grammar, meaning and discourse is embedded
