Abstract
This paper explores the implications of the Spanish discourse article 'al final' (English in the end). If 'al final' is understood as a discourse particle, some problems in respect with its categorization arise, since al final presents both adverbial and iscursive uses. In order to distinguish when al final is closer to a (semantic) adverbial use and when some discursive values are involved, this element is analyzed as an epistemic element, according to the examples of the Diccionario de partículas discursivas del español. Finally, the functions of 'al final' are organized from a discourse segmentation approach, being implemented by some theoretical considerations on the semantico‐pragmatic interface.
