Abstract

This document constitutes the Final Thesis Report of the Doctorate in Human and Social Sciences of the Pontifical University of Salamanca in its Guatemala Program. It was carried out with the purpose of analyzing the forestry research of the College of Agronomy of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala during the period 2016-2018 and contributing to its strengthening, seeking to determine what topics were investigated, what types of authors carried out the research, in which municipalities was it investigated, what were the contributions made and what impact did they have, proposing a forestry research model for its improvement. To do this, an inventory was made of all the research carried out in the relevant period and its topics were classified according to the thematic areas and lines of research of the National Forestry Research Program. 35 forest investigations were found, corresponding to nine thematic areas and 16 lines of investigation. The thematic areas investigated at least partially are: Genetic resources, Forest management and protection, Dendroenergy, Ecosystemic functionality, Biological diversity and ecosystems, Forest industry and trade, Tenure and land use planning, Forest economy and Local forest management. On the other hand, it was established that students (graduating students) are the most numerous type of author and that it was investigated directly in 62 municipalities. In addition, it was determined that the greatest contribution was in the knowledge of native forest species and that the research is perceived as having an important impact on national forestry knowledge at the exploratory level. Finally, a Forest Research Model (MIF) was developed to improve it in the College of Agronomy. It is based on five major activities: awareness, reactivation of coordination, incentives, communication of results and interaction with stakeholders.
