Résumé

In the 1950s, years of the awakening of mass tourism, French tourists led the entry of foreigners to Spain. The aim of this article is to examine the origins, particularities, and effects of French tourism in Spain from 1951 to 1962. Although the French motivations when choosing Spain as a holiday destination were in part common to those of other national contingents, there was also significant own characteristics, such as major geographical proximity, the search for a specific image of the country and its people, the preference for the autonomous travel, real estate investment, and negative externalities for tourism in France. To study these questions, we rely on a wide variety of sources coming from French and Spanish archives and information centers
