Résumé

Brain neurotransmitters are a heterogeneous group of chemical substances essential for neuronal function. Alcohol interacts with neurotransmitters in a complex and not completely-defined manner. Here, some data related to the effects of alcohol on brain neurotransmission are reviewed. Alcohol exerts a direct effect on brain function but also induces adaptation mechanisms which may lead to permanent damage. Furthermore, the interaction of alcohol with neurotransmitters is a key field for the exploration of new therapies aimed to tackle alcohol-use derived disorders.
