Abstract
The artistic trajectory and work of the painter, sculptor and engraver Agustín Ibarrola Goicoechea (Bilbao, 1930) in the field of social history of art are studied. For this purpose, the relationships among art, politics and ideology are focused, proposing the hypothesis that Agustín Ibarrola participates in the dimension of "the Political" (Carl Schmitt, 1932) through art, in the sense marked by theories about aesthetics and politics of current poststructuralist philosophers such as Chantal Mouffe and Jacques Rancière. To achieve these objectives a historiographic-chronological method is used. It is shown that Agustín Ibarrola's artistic practice participates in "the Political” but it isn´t constituted as a merely political art. Furthermore it doesn´t participate in politics. "The Political" in Ibarrola's art would be understood as an antagonism/agonism duality that acts differently in the historical contexts of dictatorship and democracy.
