Estimación de la memoria en relación al periodo de retención en niños de primariaimplicaciones en el aprendizaje

Abstract

Metamemory strategies ha ve very strong implications in social and educational child development. The behavior of 36 children, of ages between 8 and 12 were analyzed in a verbal and metamemory assignment. In the first session distortion of long term metamemory was assessed. In the second session a free memory and recognition verbal memory test was applied. The results show that there is an inverse relation between distortion in a long term metamemory recognition estimation and short term free memory. The children estimated their me mory with independence of the established retention period with regards to their short term memory. It is very important to research the capacity of estimating memory with respect to the period of retention, based on its importance in the optimization of l earning resources in children. As a metamemory strategy, it is very important to know the memory capacity with respect to the period of retention (The capacity of my memory taking into account the time I expect to hold the information), and not only with r egards to retention and information retrieving. This aspect may be an adequate performance measure of the progress in the acquisition of metamemory strategies.
