Abstract

The ability to recognize emotion in faces is fundamental for emotional regulation processes that are shaped during development, with important implications in a child's academic and social contexts. These skills could be modulated by the age of both the sender (experiential factor) and the receiver (biological factor) of the emotional expression. In order to be able to analyse the relation between experiential and biologicist factors and their effect on the recognition of emotional facial expressions, we performed a recognition task in which 46 children participated, distributed into two age groups (4-7 and 10-13 years of age). Photographs of emotional facial expressions of adult and child models were used (happiness, sadness, anger and fear). Results showed that the emotions expressed by children were more readily recognized than those expressed by adults. In addition, between group differences in favour of the older children were found for the expression of fear when the model was an adult, and in the expressions of happiness, sadness and anger when the model was a child. The results are discussed from the developmental point of view of childhood learning, addressing biological and experiential factors.
