Zusammenfassung

Pietasis one of the most ancient and significant Roman virtutes. For this reason, that design appears frequently on High-Imperial coinage. The aim of this paper is to examine the use and purpose of this iconography in one of the governments that lasted the most, and, at the same time, has been most overlooked by the historic and numismatic research: the reign of Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD). For this purpose, the coinage of Antoninus on gold, silver and bronze alloys, issued as Caesar and as Augustus, and that of the imperial domus minted during his reign was reviewed. The whole work has been oriented towards providing an interpretative overview of the use of this moral value in the iconography of his coinage.
