THIS STUDY OFFERS AN ANALYSIS OF HUMOR IN THE WORKS OF FLANN O'BRIEN AND MYLES NA GOPALEEN. THE STUDY BEGINS WITH A DISCUSSION OF VARIOUS THEORIES OF HUMOR. CHAPTER ONE PARTICULARLY EMPHASIZES THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECT OF HUMOR, THAT IS, WHY MAN NEEDS A RECOURSE TO LAUGHTER. THE SECOND CHAPTER IS DEVOTED TO THE TRADITION OF THE COMIC IN IRISH LITERATURE. THE GREAT IRISH ORAL TRADITION IS THE MAIN SOURCE OF THE FANTASY THROUGH WHICH O'BRIEN AND MYLES CREATE THEIR HUMOR. CHAPTER THREE DISCUSSES THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN BRIAN O'NOLAN, FLANN O'BRIEN AND MYLES NA GOPALEEN. THE OTHER CHAPTERS DISCUSS SPECIFIC AND GENERAL ASPECTS OF HUMOR IN THE VARIOUS WORKS. THIS STUDY EXAMINES THESE WORKS IN RELATION TO THEORIES OF RECENT LITERARY CRITIDISM. MIKHAIL BAKHTIN'S DIALOGIC EXCHANGE OF VOICES IS SEEN AS PARTICULARLY APPLICABLE TO O'BRIEN'S/MYLES' COMIC TECHNIQUE, ESPECIALLY IN THE CASES OF AT SWIM-TWO-BIRDS AND THE THIRD POLICEMAN. THIS STUDY HOPES TO PROVIDE, IN ADDITION TO ISOLATED EXAMPLES OF HUMOR, AN UNDERSTANDING AND FEELING FOR THE UNDERLYING COMIC SPIRIT.
