Abstract

This paper studies the main legal challenges posed by the metaverse, with special attention to the impact it will have on procedural law and, more specifically, on jurisdiction and the methods of resolving conflicts generated in this virtual reality. Likewise, an analysis is made of the characteristics of the metaverse and the technological model with which this initiative will be developed is discussed, by raising the debate as to whether we are faced with a single metaverse or whether various multiverses will be promoted through different technological platforms. The central point of the paper proposes different methods for resolving conflicts between avatars within the metaverse, as well as those that arise between platforms offering the service or between users and these platforms. Finally, it reflects on whether we should speak of a “metaverse law” or a “meta-law”. In other words, whether the different areas of law should face regulatory updates to regulate this new virtual reality or whether, on the contrary, it is necessary to configure a new and global legal system to regulate the metaverse.
