Résumé

Vegetation pyramids are an excellent teaching instrument for analyzing the complex interactions existing within a given environment as well as the importance that human habits of exploitation have had on the configuration of these spaces. The forest and shrublands of the «Sierra» of Salamanca (Spain), for example, look very natural, but closer analysis of the vegetation layer structure shows that the plant mass has been subjected to an important amount of manipulation. The «dehesa», «madroñal» and «jaral» are artificial plant formations and the current departure from traditional uses will mean that a different dynamic will appear in most of our forests.
