Abstract

This article reveals Teresa of Jesus’s efforts in her work –a female convert endowed with extraordinary degrees of prayer– to affirm herself in a complex society and in the ecclesiastic and spiritual medium of the 16th century through her works. Emphasis is given to her intellectual background, her vocation as a writer, the main features of her works, which draw on the humilis style, traditionally assigned to women. The article centers on concepts such as confusion, spontaneity, simplicity, colloquialism and irony. The result of this combination is the polyphony of genres and stylistic modulations which confer originality and undeniable interest to her texts.
