Resum

The purpose of this paper is to explore the poetic possibilities of place names as containers of memory in the last period of Korean poet Kim Chunsu's work. Our underlying assumption is that there is a fundamental relationship between human beings, place, and memory which brings us to consider how a place name can, through remembrance and imagination, refer to biographical experiences and recreate them in the poem. To this end, this paper analyzes images of memories introduced in the poem through the place names of the poet's hometown, Tongyeong, and the Setagaya detention center, both used to rescue memories through poetic text and framed within a primary opposition: while the hometown is depicted as a unique and timeless place of childhood reverie, Setagaya prison is configured as uniform and historical.
