Abstract

The present research analyzes, in a transversal way, the representation of gender in Spanish television series starting from two studies elaborated in 2010 and 2017. For this purpose, a content analysis of 46 television series produced in Spain was carried out, with 1187 characters, to know if there is an unequal representation between males and females. The main findings indicate that, in spite of the evolution over time, there is an insufficient representation of females, an excessive representation of characters with heterosexual orientation and of Spanish nationality and an association of females with less qualified professional occupations. In addition, their conversation topics revolve more on personal aspects, such as family and love, than on labor issues, more treated by male characters.
