Abstract

The investigation focuses on the study of the structural and sonorous logics of the oral tunes that are used in the singing of the Valencian ‘goigs’ , and in the ritual and communicative situations in which they are toned. It starts from an ethnomusicological perspective that goes on a methodological and epistemological substantiation that has been applied in the study of the construction process of collective singings and multipart singings in similar repertories, especially in singings of the Catalan linguistic domain, moreover, an approximation to the ritual structures of the ‘goigs’ is carried out using the social paradigm of the advanced modernity, which allows us to explain the transformation processes in which a concrete celebration has been submitted due to the changing social dynamics from the latest decades, and how this religious celebrations, along with the singing of the ‘goigs’ , have expanded their semantic field to include a wide plurality of meanings within the logical of the post-Christian age. The revision and clearing of the main audio-visual and sonorous fonds with registered samples of Valencian ‘goigs’ has allowed to put together a wide corpus of nine hundred and fifty examples that, together with the material coming from the fieldwork and the interviews to informers, make possible a detailed and systematic analysis of the oral tunes and the expressive mechanisms of the ‘goigs’ . With this procedure, the existence of seven melodic patterns that, with a different number of variables and a wide geographical distribution throughout the territory, are used in most of the singings of Valencian ‘goigs’ has been identified, furthermore, the different constructive and interpretative procedures in the oral tuned patterns are also analysed. At the same time, the study of five communicative situations of ‘goigs’ ’ singings -in the way of paradigmatic situations- has made possible to deeper into the analysis and comprehension of issues such as the participation, the distribution of the roles and the gender discourses, the construction and reaffirmation of the meaning structures and the processes of revitalization and potentiation in terms of identity, in both the moment in which the ‘goigs’ are singed and in the ritual as a whole.
