Abstract
Based on an analysis of the collected letters of the noble Roam Symmachus and the African Bishop Augustine of Hippo, this contribution discusses similarities and differences within relations of dependence. In both authors , lines of continuity can be noted, as well as occasional breaks in theses lines, with regard to the different forms of dependence: slavery or the colonate system. Thyis approach leads me to reflect on the role of Christianity in the coninuity or transformation of the modes of representation of inferior social groups; in short, ir serves to increase our knowledge of Christian discourse about social relations, a discourse, with its own nuances, that continues to affect the conceptualization of classical culture.
