Abstract

As a result of the combination of certain powers by the state, throughout the nineteenth century, the state administration took over the management of charitable institutions that came to be public. However, many municipal or provincial charitable boards entrusted the direction of its institutions to the Daughters of Charity. The state assumed ownership of the public charities, but entrusted its management to consecrated women who appeared to be more profitable and effective. A profit that stemmed from their religious consecration and from the direction in the field of a socio-charitable vocation. With this communication we pretend to present the process followed and the reasons why this female congregation took over the management of the public charities in Zamora and, by extension, in other provinces.
