Abstract

The performance of 10 native ecotypes of subterraneam clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) from the province of Salamanca was studied under continous grazing and three stocking rates of 4, 6 and 8 sheep per hectare in order to test their persistance and productivity. The variety 'Valmoreno' selected in Extremadura was used as the main control. The autochthonous ecotypes showed a good performance, and some of them could duplícate the number of plants per square meter of the control in the second year of the trial. Dry matter production of the least productive autochthonous ecotype was 1100 kg/ha higher than the control, an increase of 85 %. The pasture improvement based on authocthonous subterranean clover is considered of interest in this área.
