Zusammenfassung

This article proposes a study of two of the main genealogical texts produced in Aragon during the 16th century: the so-called Nobiliario de Aragón and the Memorial de linajes, the latter due to Jerónimo Zurita. A review of the manuscript transmission of both works is proposed, which involves the identification of the most important testimonies of the Memorial and the clarification of the textual relationships of the copies of the Nobiliario. On these new bases, I offer an analysis of the sources of the Nobiliario and their relationship with the Memorial, which allows us to conclude that the Nobiliario is also the work of Zurita and that it should be considered a preliminary drafting of what we know as the Memorial de linajes. Next, the sources of Zurita’s genealogical work are examined, identifying the manuscript that the Aragonese historian referred to as “Historia antigua de Aragón”, which had belonged to Pedro Garcés de Cariñena and which is preserved in El Escorial, although it is unfortunately found today mutilated and devoid of genealogical sections. Finally, a remainder of a folio from this section and a partial copy hitherto unknown are identified. I study these fragments and the transcripts of the genealogies contained in Zurita’s work (texts elaborated in the environment of Pedro de Luna, later Benedict XIII). This allows us to reflect on the contexts and characteristics of the origins of noble genealogies in the Crown of Aragon.
