Abstract

This book offers conceptual elements about physiotherapy in mental health and it constitutes a response from within the discipline to the increasingly problematic mental health situation in Colombia. It aims to strengthen and publicize the professional role of physiotherapists as members of interdisciplinary and intersectoral teams for a comprehensive approach to mental health, as well as to contribute to disseminating the impact of physiotherapy in this professional field of action. This work presents the foundations and conceptual and historical framework of physiotherapy in mental health, as well as different evidence-based physiotherapeutic intervention strategies that have proved their impact in dealing with different mental health conditions at different levels of primary care, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and care for mental illness. The authors present novel approaches and analyze the challenges of integrating physiotherapy professionals into mental health teams, their impact and leadership in processes of policy design, as well as public, political, and social management schemes, where physiotherapy must analyze and support its role as an active participant in solutions to the difficult mental health situation in Colombia and the world.
