Abstract

This paper deals with the influence of the manufacturing process on the fracture behaviour of axisymmetric notched specimens of pearlitic steels with different degrees of cold drawing. To this end, samples from different steps of the manufacturing chain were obtained. Specifically, in addition to the initial hot rolled material and the heavily cold drawn prestressing steel, two steels with intermediate cold drawing degrees have been used. The yield strength of the steel (which is a function of the cold drawing degree) is considered as the fundamental variable to elucidate the consequences of the manufacturing process on the posterior service behaviour in the presence of geometric defects such as notches. In addition, since very different notched geometries are used in the experimental programme, the effect of the stress triaxiality on the fracture process can also be analyzed.
