Resum

The term taste began to gain prominence in the aesthetic-literary debate in Italy in the last decade of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th century, a time when Italian culture and literature were aware of being in a phase of decadence due to the exhaustion of the Baroque. This study aims to analyse the meaning that the concept or idea of good taste acquires in the treatise Riflessioni sopra il buon gusto nelle scienze e nelle arti (1708 and 1715) by Ludovico Antonio Muratori, undoubtedly the most representative author of aesthetic thought and literary criticism of his time. The treatise is conceived as an ambitious project of reform and renewal of Italian cultural and literary life, in which the idea of good taste should play a fundamental role. But as the study aims to demonstrate, despite the merit of Muratori’s work and its influence on later authors, his idea of good taste remained fundamentally associated with that of judgement, that is, with an intellectual and rational faculty, capable of distinguishing between what is and is not beautiful, and not as something proper to sensibility from the point of view of fruition.
