Abstract
Objetive: to measure periodontal pain in patients with fixed multibracket appliances by comparing low friction techniques with a conventional approach. Material and methodology: a randomized clinical trial was carried out with three groups of 15 randomly distributed individuals. The total sample came 45 patients, who, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were 16 males and 29 females with an average age of 15.6 years. Low friction brackets were used for the first and second group; the third group used conventional brackets. Furthermore, the second group was also treated with a friction-reducing gel (Orthospeed®). The study used the McGill Pain Questionnaire Short Form (MPQ-SF) for pain registration purposes. This questionnaire covers a visual analog scale (VAS), a map for defining location and a brief list of descriptive terms. Criteria were measured after 4, 8 and 24 hours and from the 2nd to the 7th day after fitting the fixed multi-bracket appliances with nickel-titanium 0,014 arch wires. Data were analysed using ANOVA. Results: regarding the type of technique, the results produced by the multiple comparisons made afterwards highlight that the Orthospeed® technique shows significantly lower average pain scores (p < 0.05 in comparison with the other two techniques). No significant differences in the average pain scores (p = 0.127) were found between the technique that did not use gel and the conventional technique. Conclusions: low friction techniques with fixed multibracket appliances reduce orthodontic pain. Orthospeed® reduces periodontal pain in fixed multibracket appliances during the initial stages of treatment.
