Resumo

The Aramaic language encompasses five major periods from ancient to modern Arama-ic. In this paper we have focused on the first two phases, the ancient and the imperial. The former shows features of a language that comes to us in a great dialectal variety and reaches uniformity during the imperial period. The contribution of the Assyrian-Babylonian lan-guage and other neighbouring languages influenced, directly and indirectly, the develop-ment of the Aramaic language, which became the international means of communication in the ancient world. This work provides the most important textual sources discovered in most of the Middle East. Thanks to these sources, scholars have been able to develop a historical-geographical-linguistic study of the Aramaic language as a whole.
