Abstract
The Dictionary of Renaissance Science and Technology (DICTER) –http://dicter.usal. es/–, based on a corpus of seventy-four texts, covers a wide range of topics representative of science and technology in the sixteenth and first third of the seventeenth century. We have selected a set of cultured terms belonging to the field of natural philosophy and physics, such as ácueo, compacto, condenso, flúxil, fluxible, fluxibilidad, raridad, rarefacción, rarific-ar, rarefactivo, versátil, voluble, which are documented in advanced Renaissance texts and preferably concern subjects such as astronomy, distillation, mechanics and artillery. We compare these words in academic corpora and contrast their incorporation in historical dictionaries. Their testimony will be illustrative of the cultured neological expansion that can be detected in certain specialised fields in this crucial period for scientific progress
