Abstract

En tal caso is one of the many phrases created on the basis of the noun caso. As a phrase, it possesses a conditional conclusive value. The present paper studies the use of this phrase in the Spanish language until the end of the 20th century. It specifically focuses on the different contexts the phrase is used in, as well as on the process of its grammaticalization. The study shows that the grammaticalized use of en tal caso becomes dominant, or nearly exclusive, in the last-century texts contained in the academic corpus CDH (Historical Dic-tionary Corpus).
