Abstract

On the basis of previous work on acethylcholine and lipid synthesis and results obtained with aminotransferase inhibitors in our laboratory, we have studied a pyruvate decarboxylase activity (PDC) (2-oxoacid carboxylyase; EC 4.1.1.1.) from rat brain during the perinatal periodo We have found an extrarnítochondrial PDC activity similar to described yeast PDC. That enzyme activity showed sigmoidal kinetic with pyruvate maintaining full activity after heating at 60 OC and it also was inhibited by acetaldehyde or glyoxylate. Therefore, that activity increased irnmediately before birth decreasing quickly in the earIy extrauterine life and even more in the adult.
