Abstract
This paper aims to show a synthetic view of a very complex process: the creation of fortified rural sites in the Postimperial age. It was a feature of wide regions of Western Mediterranean, but it masks a strong diversity. In the case of Duero’s plateau, the analysis points out the connection to the formation of a political pattern based on a strong fragmentation and the role of local elites. The materiality of those sites and the interpretation of their occupations are examined, as well as the comparison of the case study with other Iberian regional cases.
