Abstract

The project ‘Between Byzantines and Lombards: Tuscania (Viterbo, Italy) and its territory between the 4th and 10th century AD’ has focused on the study of the processes of formation and development of a landscape in the interior of the Italic Peninsula which, according to documentary sources from the end of the 6th century (595), would come under the control of a bishopric. Later, in the 7th century, it became one of the most important border areas between the Byzantine and Lombard dominions in Italy, presenting itself as the best scenario for analyzing this theoretical boundary between two great powers that learned to coexist and relate to each other. On the basis of archaeological and geophysical surveys, we have carried out this first approach, which has been able to delve into the road system and mobility in this border territory, as well as the knowledge of a church, probably dating from the 6th century, which must have played a role in the hierarchical organization of this territory. In addition, a Roman bridge, hitherto unpublished, has been identified.
