Abstract
This paper explores the dialectic between the structuring principles of the Alphonsine estorias, especially the chronological one, and the narrative intention with which the texts were produced, which implied the attempt to bring together as many sources as possible. It is proposed that this dialectic was progressively resolved in favour of the narrative element, as expressed by the creation of the “estorias unadas”, but also by the inclusion of indexes of “main estorias” at the head of the various parts of the General estoria (with the exception of the first part). In this respect, we present here for the first time the index contained in a complete manuscript of the fifth part, still preserved in the first half (date of the copy of the index), which shows that this section was compiled in Alfonso X’s workshop, although it is known today only in fragmentary form.
