Abstract

Currently we know that the relationship between the oral cavity and the rest of the body is not a new concept. The reason for associating periodontal and cardiovascular disease is due to the frequency and that recent research has found that periodontal bacteria including Porphyromonas gingival's, are associated with the formation of plaques causing acute coronary syndrome. Results: The relationship between the two entities could be explained because when there is periodontal inflammation and comes into contact with the bloodstream after various procedures such as brushing teeth, can cause bacteremia. The presence of bacteria in the blood vessels cause them to release a number of mediators that are associated with platelet adhesion and aggregation, promoting foam ceir formation and accumulation and elevation of LDL cholesterol and thus may result in atherothrombotic events and therefore coronary disease. It has also been shown that the pattern of high levels of asymmetric dimethylarginine and C-reactive protein is associated with high rates of periodontal diseases and are useful as predictors of future cardiovascular events in a large proportion of the population. Conclusions: Although both diseases have common risk factors, periodontal disease should be considered as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This is not to say that from the clinical viewpoint periodontal treatment is justified as prevention of cardiovascular disease.
