Abstract

As a result of the difficulties that secondary students encounter when they have to operate with algebraic identities, we decided to explore their use of structure sense on their work on algebraic expressions that involve this type of equalities. With this aim, we proposed a written test to 33 sixteen to eighteen years old students from a high school in Granada. The test asked the students to simplify algebraic fractions and to build new expressions with the same structure than those given. Results provide information on the students' structural sense and, in particular, on how and what students visualize within an algebraic expression. As educators concerned about learning, we consider necessary that teaching promotes in students the perception of algebraic expressions from a structural point of view, and in that sense we expect this work to make a contribution.
