Various studies have pointed out the important role played by the Spanish monarchy in the construction of the Church of St. Peter, the first Catholic Church in New York. But the Spanish support for the establishment of Catholicism in North America went beyond the construction of a parish church. This article intends to point out the importance that Spain had in this process thanks to the presence of its diplomats on North American soil, the ceding of consular spaces, a chaplain at the service of the English-speaking parishioners, the support provided in the construction of the first parish and the support given to the institution of the Catholic hierarchy in the United States.
