The emergence of new festive cycles in regions of great rural influence and with an important fauna and flora, is an opportunity for better economic development, to publicize agricultural and livestock products and to attract a greater number of tourists and visitors than verify the traditional forms of life and exploitation of the environment. This can be achieved in true ecotourism, or tourism focused on and respectful of ecosystems and their practices. Such is the case of the festival of the bells (“chocalhos”) of Alpedrinha (Beira Baixa-Portugal) and also of others of the festive cycle of the municipality of Fundão, which exemplify the best of the so-called “new ruralities”. The article sets out the basic elements of this festival that began twelve years ago and is increasingly successful. The percussion and wind instruments of the numerous bands, the cowbells, the tasquiñas and the various activities that are organized, recall pastoral life and transhumance, especially practiced with the region's churra sheep, and symbolically commemorate it for the new generations. They also make known and promote the typical drinks and foods of the town: liqueurs, sausages, fried foods and, especially, cheeses. Also the fabrics, ornaments, tambourines and other traditional instruments are shown before a large audience, which on the nights of the incipient autumn playfully celebrates its roots.
