Mo Yan’s novel Red Sorghum is based on the Anti-Japanese War and folk life in Gaomi Township in northeastern Shandong Province in the 1930s and 1940s. It is a novel narrated by “I”, describing how women abandoned the traditional ideas of marriage during the Republic of China Period, embodies the awakening of women’s independence and freedom consciousness. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the reasons for these phenomena and reflect on the importance of women’s search for independence, democracy and freedom through the understanding of the female characters in the novel and their marriage.
