Resumen

All available data on the distribution of Cheiracanthium in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands are analysed, in relation to the species recorded from the West Palearctic Region. A zoogeographic analysis shows that the composition of the Iberian fauna is partly consistent with those of France and Italy, while a comparison with the North African fauna is currently not possible. The Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands have a majority of Palearctic elements, followed by Mediterranean and European ones, with far fewer subcosmopolitan and endemic elements. The number of European and endemic elements may change after future research. As the first part of a revision of the Iberian Cheiracanthium, data are provided for the identification of those species in which the base of the embolus is retrolateral and the epigynum has a deep depression. New data on the endemic Ch. ilicis Morano & Bonal, 2016 and the subcosmopolitan Ch. mildei L. Koch, 1864 are provided and analysed. Diagnoses and graphic material of males and females with the most taxonomically significant characters are included, highlighting the first dorsal image of a mating plug in Ch. ilicis, as well as new faunistic data and their phenological, ecological and habitat preferences. The relationships of these species with other West Palearctic Cheiracanthium species are analysed and discussed. Two species groups in which the origin of the embolus is in a retrolateral position and the genital plate is shallow are proposed and diagnosed.
