Abstract

The biometry and demography of a population of Mauremys leprosa from a temporary stream in Salamanca, Spain, an area where practically no information for the species exists, is described. Data compiled between March 2006 and August 2007 are used. Between November and February there is practically no activity, its maximum being between May and June. Mating was observed in March and April and spawning probably takes place between June and July. The ratio of sexes varies depending upon the time of sampling. The percentage of unsexed individuals is less than that of adults. The secondary sex characteristics are distinguished from 73 mm in males and 79 in females, which corresponds to six and seven growth rings (years), respectively. Females reach greater average size than males. It is estimated by the growth rings that the sexual maturity of the females takes place between 15 and 19 rings, whereas for males it would be between 13 and 18 approximately.
