Abstract

Ciudad Juárez has been known for the cases of femicides and women disappearances that began to be denounced in the decade of the 90s, that have positioned the city as a case study for violence against women. This resulted in an important body of recommendations and reports issued by human rights organisms, and in the historical sentence dictated by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in the case of González et al. (“Cotton Field”) v. México, in 2009. The intervention of the international human rights organisms has played a fundamental role in the transformation of the criminal justice system in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, and in the adoption of measures to prevent violence against women at a national level.
