Abstract
This volume explores the complex relationship between Alfonso X and Don Juan Manuel, two major figures in medieval Spanish literature. Alfonso X, known as the Wise King, introduced vernacular authorship to Castilian Romance literature, compiling historical and legal works. However, the perception of his governance was ambivalent, marked by family conflicts. Don Juan Manuel, while acknowledging the importance of Alfonso X, presented a nuanced image, positioning himself as heir while criticising his negative aspects. The articles in this dossier explore this tension, analysing the relationship between the two authors through textual links and historiographical reinterpretations. The works reveal the diversity of critical approaches, highlighting the reception of don Juan Manuel in the medieval and renaissance contexts.
