Zusammenfassung

In this article I suggest that the often-exaggerated debt of Juan Manuel to Alfonso X should be re-examined in light of recent scholarship. Instead of this, I argue that scholarship should pay more attention to the moral and literary values shared by his work and his attitude towards knowledge and by the books sponsored by Sancho IV.
